New construction: the importance of choosing your cabinets at the initial planning stage

24 January 2017 |Kitchen

Your dream has finally become reality, and you’re building your new home. Here’s why it’s important to choose the design and location of your kitchen, bathroom, and even laundry room cabinets in the very first stages of the planning process.

Off to the right start

From the outset of your construction project, your kitchen and bathroom cabinets will influence the design of your home’s interior. They dictate the style and choice of materials and colours, and also the type and location of lighting and accessories. The cabinets have a direct bearing on crucial decisions that need to be made very early on in the construction process, such as the location of electrical wiring and plumbing, or the types of floor finishes. It’s therefore important to make choosing your cabinets early a priority, as it will impact both cost and project delivery time.

Planning ahead also allows adjustments to the construction plans, if necessary, before the construction work begins (for example, to adjust the dimension of a wall, or change the initial location of a window or sink).

Strategic planning

When it comes to wiring, the placement of your cabinets will help define the most practical location for the room’s electrical outlets, such as next to your countertops, on the island and for the appliances. It will also dictate the type of structure you will need if you decide to use an integrated lighting solution (see the ''DESIGN FURNITURE:  LET THERE BE LIGHT!'' article on our blog).

As for plumbing, your cabinets will dictate the positioning of the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator water line in your kitchen, the sink and bathtub in your bathroom, or the laundry tub in your laundry room.

Controlling your budget

In addition, because the flooring is usually installed at the start of the interior finishing work, and since the material chosen should complement the cabinets, you will avoid delays if you’ve already selected your cabinets. This also applies to the tiles and the backsplash.

Choosing the design and location of your cabinets in the earliest stages of the planning process will prove advantageous in helping you manage your overall budget, as it will give you a valuable overview of the strategies involved, which will help you better control both the project cost and the delivery schedule.

At the end of the day, this tip may help you avoid unpleasant surprises, and perhaps even prove beneficial!
